The main goal of the Horizon Europe project “BEETHOVEN” is to develop innovative and recyclable magnetic materials and their corresponding permanent magnets that substitute rare earths (REE) in the energy and sustainable transportation sectors. We aim at developing and up-scaling innovative materials and magnets based on ferrite-based composite and high-entropy alloys with energy products above 55 kJ/m3. We will demonstrate a successful substitution of REE-magnets by BEETHOVEN magnets in 3 applications: a wind turbine for energy generation, a drivetrain for electric vehicles and a flywheel for energy storage.
14 partners from 10 EU countries and the United Kingdom, covering 4 Research Institutions, 3 Universities, 1, Technological Centre, 1 Non-Profit entity, 2 manufacturers and 2 end-users industries, compose the Consortium. CNR-IMEM Parma together with CNR-ICCOM, participate in most of activities of the project, being involved in synthesis and preparation of novel materials and BEEETHOVEN magnets, extended characterizations, recycling of magnets and dissemination and communication activities. CNR is the coordinator of the activities of the WP2 “Advanced materials design and development”.
The project has received funding from the European Union programme under the agreement n. 101129912 in the EU Call “Advanced Materials for Magnets in applications for the new energy markets (RIA)” HORIZON-CL-2023-RESILIENCE-01-37.
